Max never thought he’d be willing to step through a portal to another dimension just to escape his father’s expectations. That felt a little dramatic when he thought it out loud. Was he being dramatic?

Maximus Jennings Swanson the Third was a name that made people assume things. They assumed he was a Swanson of the well-known Swanson & Swanson investment firm. Since those two Swansons were Max’s father and uncle, this was an accurate assumption. They assumed he was heir to that family fortune, and this was also correct. However, the final assumption was that associating with Max would gain them some kind of standing with the family at large, and that was where things went abruptly off the rails.

Max had tried to distance himself at first by joining the military straight out of high school. Then the vampires rose, the military got a little weird when the government re-organized, and Max found working for the local Kiss was a much better way to piss off his father.
